In the heart of the meanders of the Seine Valley, located in a 15-hectare (37-acre) enclosed park, Jumièges Abbey is a remarkable example of medieval religious architecture in Normandy. Go and explore this restrained English-landscape park that gives pride of place the ruins of Notre-Dame Abbey Church, which was destroyed in the 19th century. Travel back in time with me thanks to a spectacular visit!
I am a great history buff, and I must admit that the ruins of Jumièges Abbey pique my curiosity. You enter the site through the gatehouse, which is in fact a splendid 14th century Gothic gate. Having read about the Abbey before my visit, I know that it is one of the oldest Benedictine monasteries in Normandy. Saint Pierre's Church was built in the 8th century, what an amazing vestige of the Carolingian period! It is also just ruins today. Notre-Dame Abbey Church was built in the 11th century. It was in fact inaugurated by William the Conqueror in 1067. I thought of all the historical figures who stood in this very spot: King Charles VII, Agnès Sorel, King Charles IX, etc. I could feel the weight of history and I felt both moved and intimidated to realise I was finally going to visit the ruins of this out-of-the-ordinary site. I left the gatehouse in an almost religious silence and I raised my eyes towards the former Notre-Dame Abbey Church. I didn't know what to say, took my breath away. I was standing at the foot of the building with its two white towers reaching 50 metres high. I was completely shocked by this sight, which seemed almost unreal. I understand better why it is referred to as "the most beautiful ruin in France". I walked among the ruins, still looking up not to miss anything. I recognized the typical Norman Romanesque style and I admired the magnificent open-air nave, reaching at least 20 metres high! I observed the vaults, still visible, and I even spotted wall paintings on some capitals. This view is bewitching and the atmosphere and the setting are tranquil, respectful. I followed a path to the ruins of Saint Pierre's Church. I was moved to discover the traces of a Carolingian painting on one of the walls. Fascinating! I wandered for a long time among the ruin of these centuries-old buildings before going towards the park, which has not finished surprising me.
I discovered a sumptuous English-landscape park from the 19th century, very restrained, which has replaced the former monastic gardens. The atmosphere is ideal for contemplation, and I made the most of this peaceful moment by admiring remarkable trees. I was delighted to discover other enchanting rooms. An elegant and impressive stone staircase leads to the terraces overlooking the park. I fell under the spell of by the landscape, I had rarely felt such a sense of calm, I soaked up the vibes of this fascinating place. I continued my way to the Clos de la Vigne, which is a place steeped in mystery and spirituality. I faced a lime tree avenue and I walked in their shade. The setting was becoming more intimate. I walked up to the gate known as "Agnès Sorel's gate" and that I when I discovered Mont Thabor. It consists in man-made mound with a symbolic religious meaning. I continued my walk to the Abbot's House, located in the hills above the park. From up there, I took in a stunning view over the ruins, which I found fascinating. While I continued to enjoy this surprising and unforgettable landscape, I slipped into reverie…
