It was on a Sunday walk along a bucolic lane that we discovered a charming little Norman village: Yquebeuf. The church was just around the bend. It was so beautiful in the sunshine that we stopped to visit. The building is in beautiful orange brick, with a slate roof and bell tower.

At the side of the road, we spotted a sign indicating that the church had been awarded the "Patrimoine rural de la Seine-Maritime" label, in particular for its stained-glass window! The historical explanations written on the blue-backed totem pole on a wooden support are a strong invitation to head for the church dedicated to Saint-Etienne.

An earlier church existed in the 12th century, but having fallen into ruin, it was rebuilt around 1767 under the influence of the parish priest, Abbé Grouard. The rectangular plan features a three-sided chevet on a sandstone base, with Saint-Jean brickwork alternating with glazed black brick. Each opening features a stained-glass window, and the bell tower is mounted on the entrance porch.
After all these historical details, we head without further ado for the wrought-iron gate that opens onto a driveway opposite the door. After a few steps, we enter and are immediately charmed by the tranquility of the place. Immediately above the door, we see the semi-circular stained-glass window, which we find highly original, with its shield of "gules à la croix fleurdelisée" held by two angels and surmounted by a helmet. This remarkable feature comes from 14th-century stained-glass windows. Thanks to the sun, we can admire its pure colors of yellow, blue and red.
The interior of the church was fitted out in 1778 in the Louis XVI style in oak, with a remarkable gold-accented Vauquelin high altar. Superb!

After touring the church, we take a stroll through the slightly out-of-the-way village. A special feature is the ceramic street signs. How charming and original!
As we set off again, we were delighted to pass by the peaceful church of Saint-Etienne one last time, offering us an unexpected moment of tranquillity. Another great discovery in the Normandy countryside!
