What is trail running? Who is it for?

Whether you’re an avid runner or not, trail running is above all for nature lovers.

It’s a demanding sport, but above all it’s a state of mind. The trail spirit is all about FREEDOM, the pleasure of simply running in nature. It’s about being at one with the environment, respecting nature and enjoying the scenery. If so, then trail running is for you!

Trail running requires specific training that’s different from running. While the runner is careful to maintain the same stride and pace throughout the race, the trail runner is constantly changing pace and adapting to the environment: forest roads, country lanes, coastal paths, climbs, descents…

4 tips before you get started

Challenge yourself, improve your endurance, recharge your batteries, give meaning to your sporting activity… All good reasons to take up trail running! Here are a few tips to help you get started:

  • Get the right equipment

As with any sporting discipline, choosing the right equipment is one of the first things to do when starting out. And this is even truer with trail running! Slippery, rocky, uphill, downhill, dry trails… You’ll be running on a wide variety of terrain, so it’s important to choose the right trail shoes. You’ll also need a water bottle, hydration bag and cereal bars. A survival blanket, whistle and headlamp are also essential for long outings.

  • Physical preparation

Trail running means hilly and uneven terrain! This requires special preparation, combining endurance, muscular strength and flexibility. Complement your training with muscle strengthening to work on your balance and strengthen your ankles. And don’t forget to warm up before each outing to avoid injury.

  • Listen to your body

Trail running is a demanding discipline. So listento your body. If you’re just starting out, keep your outings short to get your body used to this new sport. Train at your own pace, taking breaks to recover. These are the keys to making every outing a pleasure!

  • Respect the environment

Trail running takes place in the great outdoors. This sporting activity seeks to minimize its impact on the environment. That’s why you need to be discreet and leave no trace. Take all your garbage with you. This way, you can fully enjoy the surrounding flora and fauna without disturbing them.
