Guy Cassiers / Comédie-Française

Rarely has a dilemma found such fulfillment in the French language. The Racinian verses in Bérénice are among the finest in the classical repertoire, and the unhappy triangle torn between political reason and thwarted feelings crosses the centuries in renewed readings that constantly revive the issues at stake. Guy Cassiers, the undisputed master of Flemish theater, takes on this jewel with particular attention to the disarray of feelings. Berenice and Titus are in love, but Roman law prevents the new emperor from marrying a foreign queen. For his second staging with the Comédie-Française troupe, he surrounded himself with a dazzling cast. He shows a strong Queen of Palestine in the face of the cowardice of Titus, who spurns her, and of her friend Antiochus, who loves her in secret, two characters played here by the same actor. The tragedy is sublimated in a moving scenography that makes use of new technologies, with images projected to mirror the psychic meanderings of the love trio.
