Pauline Viardot / David Lescot / Bianca Chillemi
Composer Pauline Viardot was over 80 when she wrote this miniature comic opera based on Perrault?s famous folk tale. But she had lost none of her musical verve or creative ardor. And yet, like so many operettas in the French Romantic repertoire, the work fell into the dustbin of history. In keeping with a style of theater in which music plays a key role, director David Lescot, in collaboration with musical director Bianca Chillemi, has taken up the challenge of transposing the original libretto for today?s young audience. Her adaptation interweaves the spoken and sung in a new dynamic. Somewhere between theatrical enchantment and lyrical enchantment, between fantasy and melancholy, Cinderella is a total spectacle that invites the musicians to mingle with the singers in a delightful porosity. Halfway between theater and opera, this version offers a light, lively take on the 1904 score.
