
Long before the so-called Jules Ferry laws of 1881 and 1882 made education compulsory, and public primary education secular and free for boys and girls, religious schools were already educating Montivillons children. The schools of the Republic were intended above all to be the foundation of traditional values, and the figure of the schoolmaster, embodying authority and knowledge, gradually took hold in the 20th century.
