In the commune of Orival, along the banks of the Seine, stand the white cliffs of the Roches d'Orival. The calcareous grasslands and woodlands of this sensitive natural area are rich in plant and animal species. There is an exceptional diversity of orchids, insects typical of limestone grasslands (butterflies, etc.) and southern species such as the praying mantis and the green lizard.
This natural site is packed with remains tracing its history back to the Neolithic period. There are traces of the Château-Fouet built by Richard C?ur de Lion in 1195, 17th-century troglodyte dwellings, the remains of a Roman fortified camp, a Gallo-Roman fanum and brick kilns used during the 19th century.
The site is owned by the ONF and private individuals, and managed by the Département de la Seine-Maritime.
