Overlooking the Côte du Roule, another of the department's Sensitive Natural Areas, the Bois du Roule offers an exceptional panorama of the city of Rouen and the Aubette Valley. It boasts a variety of woodland formations (oak, beech, birch, etc.) and in spring, a fragrant purple mantle of wood hyacinth invades the undergrowth. Throughout the year, various species of birds can be observed in the heart of the wood.
The Bois du Roule was purchased by the commune of Darnétal in 1935. It was partially cleared in 1941 by occupying German troops to create an ammunition depot. After the war, the wooden barracks were reused to house a day-care center. Today, the site is a protected natural area and a place for relaxation and leisure, home to the Metropole Rouen Normandie?s Maison des Forêts.
The site is owned by the Commune de Darnétal.
