Remnants of the Hundred Years' War are the "bels", elevations of land with large ditches, which were fortified points. These mottes feudales (wooden fortresses dominating a flattened area) enabled the region to be dominated from any attack.

The table?s overall spiral shape underlines the constant link between past and present: the spiral starts from a medieval representation of the sky and ends in the half-spherical cap, a contemporary astronomical evocation of the Messier 51 galaxy.
