Take a stroll down its lively shopping street, and soak up its rich heritage… You can still make out the shadow of Madame Bovary here and there.

Ry is an invitation to reconnect with nature! The ideal place to explore the trails on foot or by bike, and let yourself be carried away by its positive energy.

Ry, the village that inspired "Madame Bovary".

Did you know that Ry owes much of its fame to Gustave Flaubert?

This small village was the inspiration for Yonville-l’Abbaye, the emblematic setting of his famous novel Madame Bovary. In 1991, its authentic charm even seduced Claude Chabrol, who shot his film adaptation here with Isabelle Huppert in the lead role.

In addition to its literary heritage, Ry is also known for its historical heritage. The church of Saint-Sulpice, with its superb carved oak porch inspired by the Italian Renaissance, and the town hall with its picturesque covered market bear witness to its rich past. Stroll along its flower-filled lanes, past half-timbered houses and characterful facades, and let us tell you all about the history of this town of a thousand secrets. Whether you’re a fan of literary tours or cultural visits, Ry is sure to be a delightful place to discover.

At Ry, art is no laughing matter!

In Ry, art is a story of tradition, but above all of the heart.

In this village of 800 souls, artists, craftsmen and galleries bring a unique breath of creativity to this small corner of the Seine-Maritime region.

Each alley has its own character! Take a bend in the Grand’Rue, and you’ll be surprised by La P’tite GaleRy, a haven for local artists, where paintings, sculptures and canvases rival each other in beauty.

A little further on, on the road to Blainville, push open the door of Muriel’s workshop, Graines de Fées, which honors linen and offers sewing classes for young and old. An introduction to Norman know-how that will leave you wanting to come back again and again.

Ry, village & nature in the heart of the Normandy countryside

Nestled in the heart of the countryside, Ry’s rolling hills and unspoilt nature are ideal for outdoor enthusiasts. The village abounds with hiking trails winding through the valley, perfect for discovering the wild beauty of the surrounding area.

The Crevon River, which runs through the village, offers visitors a bucolic waterside break. Don’t miss the themed trail “In the footsteps of Emma Bovary”, which invites you to discover emblematic places from the novel, such as the apothecary’s shop window or the Bovary home, all punctuated by 10 totems that punctuate your stroll.

In 2024, Ry was selected as one of the 14 villages in the running for the “Le village préféré des Français” (the French people’s favorite village) competition, a testament to its growing appeal.
Just a stone’s throw from the sea and not far from Paris, Ry has plenty of surprises in store for you.
