Legend has it that Saint-Romain, bishop of Rouen, decided to fight the “Gargouille”, a kind of dragon that haunted the Saint-Gervais meadows, but only a condemned man, who had been promised his life would be spared if he succeeded, agreed to follow him. The dragon was captured and burned, and the prisoner set free! Since then, the bishopric of Rouen has had the right to free a criminal once a year in memory of this event! This is why the fair was once called the “Foire du Pardon”.
Subsequently, the relics of the conqueror and the remains of the monster were placed in Rouen Cathedral, attracting over 10,000 people, with the same event taking place the following year and so on. And so the Saint-Romain fair was born! Gradually, not only merchants but also fairground stallholders took to the streets of Rouen. Eventually, the fair moved from the boulevards and Place Boulingrin to where you’ll find it today: Esplanade Saint-Gervais.
