Auffay à pied

Pays de Caux

Overview

In the heart of the Pays de Caux, come and explore the town of Auffay and its history thanks to a charming walk along the banks of the river Scie.

Your walk starts at the Collegiate Church of Auffay. This imposing medieval building is 77 metres high and its steeple overlooks the surrounding villages. Open to the public, the Collegiate Church is the first place to visit to learn more about the history of the town. Before you go and admire the inside of the building, take time to look at the outside, which is also surprising! Indeed, you will be able to see the famous "Jacquemarts" (bell strikers) on the facade of the collegiate church: Houzou Bénard and Paquet Sivière. Nestled in the turret, these 18th century wooden automatons strike the hours. An unusual thing to see!

Your journey back in time continues with the feudal mound where the castle of the Lord of Auffay once stood. Now destroyed, it has given way to a splendid house!

A few metres further away, along the streets, you will see typical Pays de Caux houses. These old houses used to display half--timbering and thatched roofs. They now display splendid slate and tile roofs and solid walls made of bricks and cob.

The walk then guides you towards the town centre. There, you will be able to take a break in the pubic garden of Auffay. The public garden, certified by the French Bird Protection League, has been actively involved in the protection of wildlife. If you are with your family, it is the opportunity to make the most of the garden's facilities: children playground, picnic tables, there is everything you need for a relaxing time!

You will then pass the train station and Rue de l’Abreuvoir to reach the centre of the village. Here, you will see the covered market that holds the market on Friday mornings! It is also called "carreau" (tile), a Cauchois word that refers to its square shape.

Do not hesitate to stop longer in Auffay to enjoy a gourmet break! There are several dining options in the town.

The town centre is also the starting point of pleasant hiking trails that will allow you to explore the surrounding area! These trails are listed on the information panel located Place de la République. A map is also available at the Tourist Information Centre. You should stop there to get all the advice you need!
