The action takes place in a theater. We witness the reunion of two women. Gertrude is a well-known playwright and director, while Hortense is an actress who has enjoyed her heyday. Together, they work on a new play, a masterpiece written by Gertrude. Gertrude will use her intellectual ascendancy to subject Hortense to her authorial whims; Hortense will flaunt her loves and feelings to undermine Gertrude.
