Rébultot-Lézarde

Côte d'Albâtre

Beschrijving

A stop along the renowned Abbeys Trail, Montivilliers owes its name and propserity to the prestigious women's abbey, a unique place among the numerous men's abbeys in Normandy. The former "Monasterii Villare" (the village monastery), which gave its name to the city, is one of the most important monastic foundations in the 7th century in the Lower Seine Valley.
In the Middle Ages, the Abbey of Montivilliers was very propserous. Life in the monastery ceased in 1792 after the French Revolution. The abbey would become the headquarters of the District and the "Société Populaire", a prison and then a garrison. In the 19th century, it would house a cotton mill, then a sugar refinery and finally a brewery.
