Circuit de découverte de Cany - Cany au fil de l'eau

Côte d'Albâtre

Overview

The trail "Cany au fil de l’eau" will show you the numerous attractions and sites of Cany-Barville, a typical town of the Pays de Caux, de Caux, with 3 flowers in the towns and villages in bloom competition. A few kilometres away from the sea, this charming town located in the heart of the Durdent Valley has a rich historical past…

The walk starts at the former train station of Cany-Barville, built in the 19th century. The Véloroute du Lin, a family-friendly cycle route that gives pride of place to one of Seine-Maritime's most famous emblems: flax, is located nearby!

Along the walk, you will learn more about the story of Luxembourg's Watermills. In the 19th century, the Durdent river, which runs through the town, saw the creation of 60 watermills, especially in Cany-Barville. Today, most of them have disappeared. Lovers of old trades and crafts can make an appointment to visit the former Saint Martin Watermill. This surprising 600 year old building has been turned into an ecomuseum dedicated to the past lives of the inhabitants of the region and the evolution of farm machinery thanks to more than 400 machines and 4,000 tools.

One of the stops along the walk will show you Place Robert Gabel. The building there, formerly the wheat and cloth market, was also a barracks for the cavalry during the French Revolution. Today, it is home to the Town Hall and the Tourist Information Centre.

On your way, take a break in the Clos Saint Martin park, a green haven that is planted with numerous tree species. You will be able to see the last oil mill in the town. Surrounded by flowers, this Norman mill has colourful walls made of bricks and earthenware. Further away in the park, you will be impressed by the gigantic and remarkable Ginkgo Biloba, a tree renowned for its therapeutic properties.

As you walk through the town, you will explore surprising places such as the square dedicated to Louis Bouilhet. A famous poet born in Cany-Barville, he has inspired great Norman authors such as Gustave Flaubert and Guy de Maupassant.
The rest of the walk will take you to Barville Chapel, better known to locals as Saint Siméon. Every year in May, a pilgrimage takes place there. A few metres away stands the Château de Cany, a majestic Louis XIII building that still has all its 17th century furniture. It is possible to visit its 30-hectare English-landscape garden with a guide.

The trail "Cany au fil de l’eau" is a charming walk to do and do again with family or friends. Feeling tempted? Do not hesitate any longer, come and explore Cany-Barville!
