Overview

Sensitive Natural Environments

The Amont Cliff is one of the biggest coastal sites in Normandy. This natural area is of outstanding ecological interest for its flora and the birds, and offers remarkable viewpoints of the Needle of Etretat, which testifies to the erosion of the cliffs, and of the Chapel Notre-Dame de la Garde.
The coastal footpath allows visitors to explore the site freely and discover the wealth of treasures this site has to offer.
The Amont Cliff site used to be popular among locals who came there to listen to the roaring waves on stormy days. It was also famous with the greatest Impressionist painters of the 19th century. At the top stands the Chapel Notre-Dame de la Garde, built in 1854 to pay tribute to the sailors. It was destroyed during WWII and rebuilt in the 1950s. A museum dedicated to two missing pilots, Nungesser and Coli, is located opposite the chapel.
This site belongs to the Conservatoire du littoral (Coastal protection agency), and is managed by the Department of Seine-Maritime.
